We’ve all heard the phrase:
“Once you turn blank, it’s all down hill from there”
Whether that blank is 30, 40, or 50, let’s face it the idea of aging often gets a bad rap. With human life expectancy being 79 years old, the investment to stop the clock on aging is even more pressing as it has ever been. Society has taught us that getting older is not only inevitable but yet the evidence of aging should be slowed down by any means necessary. This further explains why the anti aging beauty category is a 100 billion plus dollar industry.
We all love a youthful glow. Dermatologists today tell us that the most effective way of maintaining our glow is to create good skincare and lifestyle habits today that will pay dividends in both our health and appearance later.
Check out these 4 recommendations of skincare habits you can implement today that will allow you to slow down the clock even while you are still “young and fabulous”.
1. Invest in a “Big Girl” skincare routine
Spending money on skincare is not reserved for just those with problematic skin. Invest in a multi step regimen of products that allows you to cleanse, tone, and moisturize your skin both day/night and help fight the signs of aging too. My personal favorite right now is Rodan + Fields Redefine regimen that I’ve been using faithfully since I turned the Big 30. What I love the most about this regimen is the immediate difference I can see in my skin as well as knowing that I’m investing early in reducing an issue before it even becomes one. Treat your skin now so it can you treat you later.
2. Exfoliate On the Reg
Out with the old and in with the new. Skin that is. Exfoliation is the process of removing of old dead skin cells in order to assist in the renewing of new ones, giving a more vibrant glow. Notice your skin getting a little dull? Try exfoliating 1-2 twice a week depending on your texture and tolerance. But avoid daily use to reduce the risk of over exfoliating . Don’t let exfoliation just be limited to your face though. Find a scrub that can serve for both your body and face. My go-to product when I want to experience a spa treatment at home is R+F Microdermabrasion paste. Heaven in a jar.
3. Moisture. Repeat. Moisture
Moisture is key so don’t cheat your skin from the moisture it requires. Daily moisturizing will help hydrate your skin leading to the decrease in the appearance of fine lines and blemishes. The best time to moisturize is both fresh out the shower and immediately after you cleanse your face. Your skin is definitely worth it.
4. Sunscreen me please.
Contrary to misconception, sunscreen is for everyone. Don’t make the serious mistake of the thinking you are immune from sun damage due to your skin color or ethnicity. UV rays have the ability to penetrate all skin so get in the habit of slapping on SPF to not only prevent sun damage but reduce the signs of aging. Common aging symptoms due to UV overexposure include sagging skin, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, dark patches, etc. Ensure your skincare has SPF as a part of it. Besides no one wants to look like they’ve been left out in the sun!
